Pentecost on Sunday – Time to Wear Red!
This Sunday, June 8, is our marvelous celebration of Pentecost, the birthday of the Church (someone else’s birthday as well). It is the day the tongues of fire bestowed the Holy Spirit on the followers of Jesus. When we wear red on Pentecost, we remember those fiery red flames and can just feel that Holy Spirit down to our souls.
Red is the liturgical color for other special events in our church – confirmations, ordinations, celebrations of new ministry. These are special occasions when we invoke the Holy Spirit’s presence.
The liturgical color red also represents the blood of Christ, so red is the color for Holy Week and for the remembrances of Apostles, Evangelists, and martyrs.
So, if you can, wear a touch of red this Sunday and allow the Holy Spirit to warm your heart.
For the Fire of God to Become a Fire in Our Bones:
O Spirit of God, you who set the disciples aflame with the fire of God, put a fire in our bones, we pray, so that we, in Jesus’ name and for his sake, might preach the good news to the poor, heal the brokenhearted, proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight to the blind, and set the oppressed free. We pray this in the life-giving name of Jesus. Amen. (Prayers for the Pilgrimage, p. 66)
Come, Holy Spirit, Come,
