Thin Spaces

Last Sunday I mentioned the Celtic spirituality understanding of thin spaces, liminal spaces, holy thresholds at the edge of this world and the mysteries of the beyond.

I am writing this reflection from a thin space for me - at the Atlantic Ocean’s edge.

In the pre-dawn hours there are subtle, imperceptible changes on the horizon-deep orange to light orange to glimpses of the sun before it emerges from the sea.

The backdrop and soundscape of this transformation are the gentle ebb and flow of the waves-these tides of the sea and of life.

The subtle changes on the horizon caused me to reflect on the subtle changes in my life - physical, emotional, spiritual changes as maturity (aging) progresses.

During dinner with a friend of over 50 years, we mused about the seasons of our lives. She recently encountered a former student whose first comment was “You used to have dark hair!” Oh my. So did I !

Even with these subtle physical changes - hair color, wrinkles, an occasional synapse lapse- we are richer for our life experiences- our joys and sorrows, our deeper relationship with the divine.

Like the sea and each new day, even with continual change, our essence is ever constant, beautifully and wonderfully made.

God’s peace, Judy Q
