God’s Grandeur

I danced with the sea before sunrise. The gentle waves rolled onto the hard sand beach but I stepped back before the foam could touch my toes. In the pre-dawn hour, I prefer to absorb the sounds and smells and sights of the sea, to ponder the rhythm of the ocean, how this faithful companion is ever constant, yet ever new and changing.

When visiting my home beach in North Florida, my favorite ritual is to stand in awe of the glorious sunrise over the Atlantic Ocean. I am not alone. Others are statues, like me, facing east, awaiting the magical moment when the orange ball pops up on the horizon over the water.

I can understand why ancient cultures worshiped a sun god. This bright light of a new day brings hope.

Psalm 19 sings “the heavens declare the glory of God, the skies proclaim the work of his hands.” The poet Gerard Manley Hopkins affirms “The world is charged with the grandeur of God.” (God’s Grandeur)

Yes, for me the sunrise over the sea is indeed God’s grandeur and a glorious reminder that God will bring hope for a new day every day.

God’s peace, Judy Q
