A Note From Father Bob

What is the difference in being a parent and a grandparent? Kay and I have 6 wonderful grandchildren, from ages 8 to 14. We love being with each one, as much as we can. We go to band concerts, soccer games, 8th grade football games, and swim meets. They keep us busy. And we love to “spoil” them… for instance, when they spend the night with us, they may suggest; “Let’s go get doughnuts for breakfast!”… and of course, I am ready to jump in the car to get some doughnuts…not just a dozen glazed, but also chocolate covered, raspberry filled, and cinnamon twisties. Now, the difference in being a parent and a grandparent, is that if our kids had asked for doughnuts, I would have said: “There is cereal in the cabinet!”

What is the difference in being an “Interim Rector” and being a “Rector”? As Interim Rector, my main responsibilities are to lead worship and offer pastoral care. In other words, I can “spoil” you...because I do not have a lot of other responsibilities that a full-time Rector has. I am with you for a short while, an interim time, so I do not have to plan, or vision, or act as CEO in running the church. These are important roles for the Rector, as well as leading worship and pastoral care. Part of the role of being Interim Rector is to “fix” things that may seem to be broken in a parish, before the new rector is called. But at St. James, I have not found any thing broken, so far. It is not my role to start new programs, or change the direction of ministry, or to be a part of the community… as I would if I were Rector.

So as I enjoy this time with you… I hope you are enjoying it, as well. Thank you for allowing me to share in this Interim time with you.
